Zermatt

With a skyline dominated by the majestic Matterhorn peak, Zermatt is quite simply one of the most iconic ski resorts in the world. The resort boasts spectacular scenery, some of the finest haute cuisine in the Alps and a wonderful range of slopes, though a lack of beginner slopes means there are better options for complete beginners. Zermatt’s ski area links in with Cervinia, over the border in Italy. Cervinia sits the other side of the Matterhorn mountain and boasts a further 350 kilometres of terrain for skiers to explore.

In resort, cars are banned so it’s very peaceful and pedestrian friendly. Electro buses and taxis are in use to travel round resort if you don’t want to walk though. There are pros and cons to this: it makes things more peaceful and quiet but does mean getting around town is slightly tricky in places.

The slopes above Zermatt are ideally suited to intermediate and advanced skiers keen to really tuck in the mileage under their skis each day. Outstanding off piste potential coupled with challenging slopes and varied gradient make for wonderful days spent exploring the valley. Over in Cervinia the slopes are more gentle, but the link is temperamental in bad weather and takes a while. Families with young beginners would perhaps be better off to stay on the Italian side if they’re keen to experience this particular part of the Alps.

Regarding the après ski and nightlife, Zermatt is a cosmopolitan and welcoming resort with the majority of the nightlife focused around the lively resort...
